Learning to Strum the Guitar

Learning how to play the guitar takes time even if it does not guarantee that the person will become a rock star. One can still do it by practicing often then harnessing his skill.

There are two ways for z person to start strumming the guitar. The first is doing it with the fingers and the other is doing it with a pick.

Practice starts by finding a place where you won?t be disturbed. Positioning does matter a lot so it?s best to put the guitar over the right knee (for a right handed person and vise versa if left handed) in order to play well.

There are some rules that you must remember when strumming. Of the 5 fingers, only 4 are used. The thumb touches and from to time adjusts to the three brass strings. The index, middle and ring fingers will handle the three treble strings. The pinkie is not used since it is the shortest finger and is not conducive to playing the guitar.

The guitarist can start by putting the right hand over the body of the guitar. The thumb should then touch the lowest string which is the low E.

At the same time, the left hand should touch the easy G chord and the index finger can go to the third fret at the top which is known as the high E string.

The right thumb will then stroke the 4th string then adjustments of the fingers can be made to hear it at different sounds and intervals.

If the person feels uncomfortable letting the fingers do the work, then he should start by using a flat pick. Some people have said that this is the easiest way to learn since a guitar has steel strings. By holding the pick with the thumb and ring finger then practicing it at different intervals, in time you will get the feel of playing the guitar.

Strumming is the best way to learn how to play a guitar. This can be done by buying a song book and reading the chords or learning them from friends.

When you are ready to move from drills to a playing a song, it is suggested that you have the music playing in the background.

Strumming is not only for beginners as some of the most skilled guitarists do this to warm up before practice or a gig. Everyone has to start somewhere and it starts by knowing the basics.

CONAN IN CHICAGO

Conan O`Brien interviewed Dave Chappelle Wednesday, but Chappelle`s answers were almost identical to jokes he told the night before at Zanies comedy club in Old Town.

Was he using Zanies to warm up for "Conan"? Or was he just using his jokes in an interview, as comedians will do? Either way, it was funny stuff. He said:

- His wife wasn`t happy after he nixed a big contract to keep making "Chappelle`s Show" for Comedy Central: "Don`t think you can just walk away from $50 million and your wife will be cool."

- It`s easier for celebrities like him to get in trouble, because strangers go up to him and offer, "Hey, Dave, I got 12 naked bitches in a hot-air balloon. "

- And he met Jessica Simpson recently. She "gave me some sugar," and "I opened my mouth a little bit. I had to."

Booking Chappelle on "Late Night" -- the second of four O`Brien`s doing in Chicago instead of New York -- was a good "get," as they say. Until his $50 million deal burst, Chappelle was the First Coming of something unique: a great comedy icon for teens, college kids and fans of smart but silly humor.

Roughly 3,800 filed into the theater on Wednesday to holler and laugh at Chappelle and O`Brien. Only a few people in the standby line for free tickets didn`t make it in. The week`s first show, on Tuesday, got double the average number of Chicago "Late Night" viewers.

O`Brien`s Chicago-centric sketches have been outstanding. Tuesday, it was the masturbating bear parachuting out of a plane onto Lake Michigan. On Wednesday, O`Brien showed a prerecorded bit of him playing guitar with Lil` Ed Williams at B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted.

A lot of people gripe about the redundancy of the blues, but O`Brien actually found something to do about it. Williams slowly repeated lines like "My baby done left me," and O`Brien sang answer choruses, complaining that Lil` Ed was being too negative about his "baby`s" prospects, and that Ed was repeating himself too much about his dog.

O`Brien made a crack about the way the walls of B.L.U.E.S. are nailed up with photos of celebrities who have nothing to do with blues. He pointed out the framed pictures and noted: "All the legends have played here -- Billy Crystal, Bo Derek, and nobody plays the blues like local ABC reporter John Garcia." It was a joke, but it was also social commentary, don`t you think?

Chicago references kept a-comin`. One sketch used footage of the locally made movie "The Hunter," the part where a car goes soaring off Marina City II tower into the Chicago River. Chicago native Common rapped to ambient and deep bass, trip-hop grooves.

And "Cheers" actor and former local George Wendt bounced in for a recurring gag where he has to do wacky things. He was supposed to sink a three-point basketball shot. During a commercial, Chappelle went over for a little one-on-one.

The guy sitting next to me (my editor) said, "There`s something you never think you`ll see in your life -- George Wendt guarding Dave Chappelle."

That`s what talk shows are for. They`re like a little "Battle of the Network Stars." On their best days.

HIS LOCAL QUIPS ON THE NEW CTA LINE:

"Officials say the Pink Line will be just like the other lines, only gayer."

ON CHICAGO`S BID FOR THE 2016 SUMMER OLYMPICS:

"If that happens, the Olympic logo will be five interlocking onion rings."

On more people preferring wine to beer:

"In Chicago, most people`s favorite kind of wine is something called Cabernet Old Style."
